Kau is the southernmost point of the Big Island, and includes the small towns of South Point, Naalehu and Pahala. Though most of this region is barren and desolate, the towns are surprisingly charming – like finding an oasis in the desert. Flowers and farming are a part of the local economy, and many visitors are drawn to the Kau district to view the majestic Kilauea Cauldron along the slope of Mauna Loa Volcano that looms in the distance.
