If you’re thinking about improving your home, you may want to start at the top. Your roof not only keeps out the rain, but it can also add to your home’s value.
Homeowners are usually surprised to hear that as much as 40 percent of their home’s curb appeal actually comes from the roof.
With real estate prices at an all-time high, it’s easy to forget that resale prices of homes can be dramatically affected by the roofing material selected.
Roof design gives a building its identity and springs from the shape, style and period conceived originally by the home’s architect. A roof is intended to harmonize with the overall structure. So when replacing a roof, it’s important to be sensitive to the way the new materials fit into the existing design.
Designers will recommend taking a drive around the neighborhood to see how different roofing affects the home’s overall character. It’s especially important to notice how the wrong choice can compromise a building’s architectural integrity.
If it is time for a new roof, you may want to consider if yours will be able to endure the lashings of hurricane-strength winds. One way to give your roof extra protection against the forces of Mother Nature — according to the Oahu Civil Defense Agency — is with hurricane clips. Intended to tie the roof to the walls better than nails alone, clips may minimize the chances of losing the roof over your head during a storm. Talk to a qualified architect, engineer or licensed contractor.
